The Ultimate Guide to Selling Your Motorhome
06.10.22
It may surprise you now, but there will come a time when you decide to sell your current motorhome.
Perhaps the moment to go for that upgrade has finally arrived - a more current model which is brand new or bigger or better kitted out. Something which has a more involved aesthetic and increased specifications, and which demonstrates your deeper commitment to the motorhome life. Or perhaps you’re actually going the other way and want to downgrade. A smaller vehicle now that you’re a little older and your needs have changed, or the kids have left home, and big family holidays are a thing of the past. Or perhaps you’ve even gone so far down the road as to decide that life on it is not for you anymore, after all.
Whatever the motivation when you’re thinking “it’s time to sell my motorhome”, there are things you need to consider before you take the plunge.
1. Options for selling
You have various options when it comes to selling your motorhome.
•On your drive: Your vehicle is parked up and highly visible – but only to those who see it! Even though you’ve spent a bit of time putting together the sign that’s in the window, giving a bit more information than just ‘for sale’, the audience for your efforts is minimal. If you must go with this method, it’s a good idea to somehow think of ways people have something to ‘take away’ with them. Perhaps a leaflet they could take away or you could even add an internet link of some kind that they can tap into their phones and see photos of the interior etc…
•Online: You could spend time listing it on Facebook marketplace or some other selling platform like Gumtree or eBay (taking as many photographs as possible to show the interior as well as the exterior and highlighting any faults which may affect someone’s sense of value when they pay for it). Effort will include taking photos and uploading them, as well as writing up a bit of blurb and listing all the necessary specifications.
•Newspaper or listings magazine: although the common notion is that ‘print is dead’, the truth is that for the mid- to older generations it really is not. People still like to have newspapers and magazines in their hands (simply check out your local newsagent or the magazine section in your supermarket for evidence of their remaining popularity), and these can be a great way to list your motorhome or caravan for sale. Bear in mind this is not an immediate method like the internet, due to industry printing and publication schedules, and you shouldn’t expect to have the idea to sell one day and then a sale to happen the next.
•Auction: Vehicle auctions are popular ways for people to buy and sell, and if this is the method you would like to employ to sell your motorhome then find your nearest auction house on the internet by searching for ‘motorhome auctions’.
•Dealership: This is the tried-and-tested best way to sell your vehicle (whether it’s a motorhome, caravan or anything else) as almost every last bit of hassle is removed from the process for you. You could sell directly to a dealer, so that they own the vehicle and sell it on, or you could opt for the brokerage method where it’s still yours, but they sell it for you.

2. Valuation
You’re lucky as a motorhome owner, because your vehicle’s rate of depreciation is lower than that of other vehicles. A motorhome tends to retain a good proportion of its value so when the time comes to sell on, it should net the owner a respectable price. But there’s a key contribution you have to make to this – and that’s looking after it.
Regular engine and systems maintenance is of primary importance. It’s a vehicle so it needs to move, and to move it needs the mechanical bits to be functioning correctly, so getting a professional to look over these aspects and make repairs or improvements where necessary is essential. You yourself, though, can have a major impact too. You can keep seals and moving parts functioning with a regular bit of upkeep.
Bumps, scratches, scrapes and dents on the exterior should be dealt with wherever possible. Things such as the condition of tyres, and whether awning sliders work as they should, will also affect the valuation of the motorhome. Basically, the aim should always be to get as close to mint as you can get – obviously that’s impossible, as your vehicle will have spent time on the road and been lived in - but if you aim high you are going to achieve a standard which will be, at the very least, acceptable.
Always making sure the interior is in as good a state as possible is a great way to keep things feeling fresh and looked after. After you’ve been away in the vehicle, giving it a good clean and tidy is important, aiming to always keep things as fresh and neat as possible.
All of these efforts will contribute to a positive valuation when it comes to selling your motorhome.
