Do Motorhomes Hold Their Resale Value?

Do Motorhomes Hold Their Resale Value?

24.04.23

Put simply, yes they do.

Buying a motorhome is quite an investment - and for some people an important part of the purchase is knowing whether they’ll get good money back when it’s time to sell.

The answer is that all motorhomes depreciate in the first year following sale from brand new. However, in general they should hold a decent proportion of their value at a resale stage later.

Across the board, though, this will depend on various things including the condition. Therefore maintenance and upkeep during a period of ownership is essential. There are other factors, too.

What affects the resale value of a motorhome?

Leaving the forecourt: New motorhomes lose the most value straight after the original purchase.

Age: With a few exceptions, a motorhome that is over a decade old may lose up to 70% of the initial value. Up to that point it will have depreciated relatively slowly (other than that initial drive off the forecourt).

Mileage: Low miles ‘on the clock’ is always a factor in keeping the value up. This is because the engine and mechanics will have been put through less, and there will be more minimal wear and tear.

Wear and Tear: As well as wear too the engine and mechanical aspects of a motorhome, any dents, scratches or dings and blemishes to the exterior, or worn and tired interior, or faulty or dated appliances will lower a motorhome's resale price.

Element Damage: The condition of the interior is a big selling point as it is always important to potential motorhome buyers. If there is water damage to structure or to the fixtures and fittings,m this will decrease the overall value.

Which types of motorhome hold their value?

Class B motorhomes (ie. campervans or camper conversions) tend to retain their value a little more than class C motorhomes (ie. coachbuilt) or class A (ie. A-class). Making sure you pick a motorhome from a reputable and easily recognised brand is going to mean your resale value will definitely remain high (bearing in mind all of the things listed above), as people like to pay for the peace of mind and perceived reliability and quality that familiarity brings.

What to do if you’re selling

Put very simply – look after your motorhome all the way through its life. Keep on top of maintenance and upkeep tasks, as well as all servicing etc. Clean and tidy regularly.

What to do if you’re buying?

Look out for a motorhome that has been well looked after, and that has all of its paperwork (services etc) present and correct.
